FAQS

What is a biokineticist?

Biokineticists are healthcare professionals who use exercise as a treatment to improve physical functioning, health, and performance. Our focus is on preventing and treating injuries or diseases by improving movement, strength, and fitness through scientifically designed exercise programs.

Biokinetics can help with a wide range of conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries (like sprains, strains, and fractures), back and neck pain, chronic conditions (such as diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease), post-operative rehabilitation, and sports injuries. They also assist in managing lifestyle-related diseases, improving general health, and preventing future injuries.

Biokinetics is centered around using exercise programs to rehabilitate injuries, improve movement, and enhance overall health and fitness after the initial treatment phase. Physiotherapy, on the other hand, focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute injuries, pain, and disabilities through physical therapy techniques like massage, manual therapy, and modalities like ultrasound or heat.

Our biokinetic sessions starts with an assessment of your movement, strength, flexibility, and overall physical condition. Based on the assessment, our biokineticists designs a personalized exercise program to target specific areas of weakness or injury. The session will involve guided exercises, stretches, and movements aimed at rehabilitation or improving physical performance.

You do not typically need a referral to see a biokineticist.

The number of sessions depends on the severity of your condition and your goals. Acute injuries or short-term issues may only need a few sessions, while chronic conditions or long-term rehabilitation can require ongoing sessions. Our biokineticists will assess your progress and adjust the plan accordingly.

We are covered by all large medical aids in South Africa and charge medical aid rates. We do run a cash practice – meaning you pay us first and we submit the paid invoice to your medical aid for them to reimburse you.

After surgery, biokinetics can help restore movement, strength, and function in the affected area. A biokineticist will design a progressive exercise program to aid your recovery, prevent muscle wastage, and enhance mobility. This helps speed up the healing process, reduces the risk of re-injury, and supports a full return to activity.

Yes, you can often continue to train during rehabilitation, but it will depend on the nature and severity of your injury or condition. We will guide you through exercises that are safe and beneficial for your recovery while modifying or avoiding activities that could worsen your condition. The rehabilitation program will be carefully structured to allow for training in a controlled way, focusing on restoring movement, strength, and functionality, without compromising your healing process. As your recovery progresses, more intense training can be gradually reintroduced.
