what is biokinetics

Movement is medicine.

Biokinetics is a registered allied health profession in South Africa, regulated by the HPCSA. Where physiotherapy often focuses on acute pain and passive treatment, biokinetics focuses on the next step: rebuilding strength, mobility, control and confidence through tailored exercise programmes.

It is the bridge between “I am out of pain” and “I am back to doing what I love.”

Phase 1

Physiotherapy

Focuses on acute pain relief and passive treatment: manual therapy, electrotherapy, dry needling. Ideal for the first phase of an injury.

Phase 2

Biokinetics

Focuses on long-term rehabilitation through structured exercise. Rebuilds the strength, mechanics and resilience that stop the injury coming back.

Common questions

Do I need a physiotherapist’s referral?

No. You can book directly with us. Some medical aids ask for a doctor’s or physiotherapist’s referral before claiming. We will let you know if that applies to your scheme.

How long until I see results?

Most clients feel noticeable improvement within 4 to 6 weeks. Full rehab timelines depend on the injury. ACL recovery, for example, runs 6 to 9 months from surgery to full return-to-sport.

What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable workout clothing you can move in, and a water bottle. We provide everything else. If you have recent imaging or surgical reports, please bring those.

Will I be doing this forever?

No. The goal is to build the strength, control and confidence to manage your body independently. Most rehab journeys are 8 to 24 weeks. Many clients then continue with monthly check-ins.

Can biokinetics replace physiotherapy?

It is not a replacement. It is the next step. Physio is excellent for the acute injury phase. Biokinetics takes over once you are stable enough to start exercise-based rehab.
